Art and Design

Art and Design Intent

Art and Design is a subject that inspires creativity, imagination and self-expression, and at Stroud Valley we want to help shape learners who have a positive attitude towards art and design and a curiosity about the creative world around them. We work in a range of different ways, both individually and collaboratively, encouraging children to experiment, explore and communicate their ideas with confidence. We make links with the real world wherever possible, enabling our children to understand why they are learning these skills and how creativity enriches their lives, showing children that art is enjoyable, meaningful and that everyone CAN be an artist.

We want children to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding through drawing, painting, sculpture and other creative disciplines whilst exploring a wide range of materials, techniques and processes. We encourage children to take risks, experiment and learn from mistakes, developing resilience and confidence as they create, evaluate and refine their own work. By studying the work of a diverse range of artists, craftspeople and designers from different cultures and periods of history, children develop an appreciation of the rich artistic heritage that has shaped our world.

We aim to nurture imaginative, reflective and confident learners who are able to express their ideas, thoughts and emotions creatively. Through meaningful opportunities to observe, create and evaluate, children develop their artistic skills, critical thinking and appreciation of art and design, preparing them to become creative individuals who value the importance of the arts in their own lives and in the wider world.
