Year 3/4: Ruby: Gallery

STEAM centre trip- Swindon

Date: 27th Apr 2026 @ 4:03pm

Diamond and Ruby Class went to visit the STEAM centre in Swindon as part of their Railway Revolution topic this Summer term. As part of the trip, we had a fantastic workshop where we learnt about people who supported the building of the railways in the 1830s and people who were against them being built. To top it all off, we took the train there and back along one of the lines which Brunel designed when he was working at the centre, which used to be the headquarters of the Great Western Railway.

Mosque and Museum trip

Date: 10th Feb 2026 @ 3:15pm

Last Wednesday Diamond and Ruby Class went on the train to Gloucester, the children were very excited to be travelling by train (a first for some of them) and we took up almost a whole carriage!  We then walked to the Masjid-e-Noor mosque and learnt all about Islam and what happens in a mosque.  The children asked lots of fantastic questions and were very respectful.  Then we walked to the Gloucester Musuem and learnt about Anglo-Saxons setlling in Gloucester.  The children did role-play and looked at artefacts, as well as listening to an Anglo-Saxon tale called 'The Dragon of Deerhurst'.  Then we hopped back on the train - a great school trip and all on our doorstep.

Pancake Racing

Date: 10th Feb 2026 @ 11:43am

Pancake Racing was flipping marvellous.  Thanks to Mrs Priestly for organising it - we all had such a good time!

Cooking in Term 2

Date: 19th Dec 2025 @ 11:54am

This term our Geography topic has been 'Where in the World?' and we have learnt about where our food comes from. We had lots of different fruits, vegetables, cereals and meats from around the world including:
Week 1: Oranges

Week 2: Wheat

Week 3: Bananas

Week 4: Rice

Week 5: Antipasti (Meditteranean meat and cheese)

We made orange juice, baked bread rolls and banana bread loafs, vegetable fried rice and sampled lots of Mediterranean meats, cheeses and vegetables.

There were cutting, peeling, baking, kneading and all types of cooking skills involved!

Gladiator camp

Date: 17th Oct 2025 @ 3:58pm

Stroud Valley school became Stroud Valley ludus and Mrs Priestley put the class through their paces in a Gladiator training camp!
The gladiators had to create their own sword, wooden throwing block and a pine cone to throw.
In the afternoon, we cooked a Roman pancake over the fire.
Thanks to all of the parents who came and watched the gladiator competition at the end!

Roman Baths trip

Date: 7th Oct 2025 @ 12:43pm

Diamond and Ruby class went to the Roman Baths for an amazing trip where we had an awesome workshop in the new investigation zone as well.

Making a canal

Date: 11th Nov 2024 @ 4:50pm

After learning how and why canals were built we made our own.  The children formed embankments and cut out a staright canal.  They lined the canal and filled it with water.  Then they added boats, an engineer, mill owners, buildings, horses and lots more.

Steam Museum Trip

Date: 11th Apr 2024 @ 3:47pm

Exploring how a horseshoe magnet can be helpful

Date: 28th Feb 2024 @ 6:09pm

In our Science learning we explored how magnets can be used in everyday life . . .

Ruby visit Slimbridge Wetlands Centre

Date: 24th Jan 2024 @ 4:03pm

We enjoyed the day at Slimbridge and took part in lots of activities to become "Guardians of the Wild". We used our senses and were introduced to the character Ava, an Osprey chick, on her journey to migrate. As well as taking part in these activities, we were also lucky enough to explore the wetlands. We particularly loved the adorable Otters, Water Voles and Harvest mice. We loved our daytrip and now look forward to completing the challenges set by Ava.

Ruby erupt volcanoes!

Date: 19th Dec 2023 @ 4:27pm

This week we were inspired by the book "Escape from Pompeii" to create and erupt our own volcanoes. We are now writing our own set of instructions for our Non-Fiction unit. We had such fun and have learnt about all the features needed for an instruction text to be successful.

Shadow Puppets

Date: 23rd Nov 2023 @ 8:15am

We have been finding out about shadows . We explored moving our opaque  puppets nearer and further from a light source and found out that the distance affects the size of the shadows. Next, we experimented using a torch as our light source and a white sheet as our screen to put on a mini puppet show for our friends.

Are you a hero or a villan?

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 8:35am

In today's Science learning about light we found out all about sun safety. We learned the words  ultraviolet and ray. Then we had a fun game of "Heroes and Villains" where we had different statements about the sun to read and then decide if that was a "Hero" or "Villain". Some of us spotted that some statements could belong in both groups and we were able to use our scientific words to justify our reasoning. It was quite a noisy game but lots of fun! Mrs R-T chose to be the villan and Miss Taylor was the hero :)

Science Investigators

Date: 15th Nov 2023 @ 12:56pm

Mirror mirror on the wall - who is the fairest of them all?

Date: 14th Nov 2023 @ 1:29pm

In today's science learning we have been finding out about reflection. We found out that light travels in straight lines and bounces off flat, reflective surfaces such as a mirror. During our investigations today, we used a mirror to write secret messages for a friend that had the letters reversed – they needed a mirror to read them! Then we used a mirror help us travel along different chalk lines drawn on the hall floor. We used the mirror held above our heads to track the reflection and move along the lines. It was tricky not to have a “sneaky peak” at the ground to help us!

Year 3 Scientists

Date: 13th Nov 2023 @ 2:42pm

This week’s Science topic for Year 3 is all about Light. We got busy sorting different light sources into 2 groups :- "natural" and "artificial".

Next we found out about retro-reflective material. Our challenge was to adivse a book bag company about what material could be used to ensure the bookbag could be seen safely outdoors at night.  In groups, we predicted which materials would be most reflective and then used a torch to test our predictions. When we shared our results we discovered eveyone had predicted foil to be the most reflective and our tests proved that our predictions were correct!

Corinium Museum Trip

Date: 18th Sep 2023 @ 4:37pm

We visited the Corinium Museum in Cirencester to kick start our topic. We took part in a great workshop which showed us how the Romans lived and then explored the museum and its fantastic artefacts which were over 2000 years old! We had a great time and have come away with some super facts for our topic lessons.

Year 4 Overnight Stay

Date: 15th Jun 2023 @ 12:16pm

What a great time we all had on our overnight stay at school. The children enjoyed taking part in the range of activites on offer. There was fimo clay where the children created wonderful keyrings; team building games; mario kart on the switch and even a huge bouncy castle! Lots of the children and Mrs Barrett enjoyed the kareoke machine that Vinny provided. During the evening, we tucked in to a yummy BBQ follwed by a delicious ice lollie. Much later on, we settled down for a film with poporn before we finally attempted to go to sleep! It was a lovely experience for all the children and we hope they all had lots of fun!

A Visit to Stroud Library

Date: 3rd Jan 2023 @ 10:30am

Diamond and Ruby classes enjoyed a great trip to Stroud Library this week. We were given an information talk about how to access fiction and non-fiction texts. Then we got busy taking part in a treasure hunt to find a variety of different titles in the children’s section. We all got the chance to select a book to take home and used the machines to borrow them. After that we had the chance to work in the lab with an “apple piano” made by using our hands to complete a circuit of wires connected to different apples. It was fun to experiment with the different notes and some of Stroud Valley’s budding scientists spotted that the piano would still work if we added extra people’s hands into the circuit. Finally we saw the laser cutter in action and it created cardboard ghosts for us each to take home. Many thanks to Archie and Ollie from Stroud Library for leading our exciting activities.
