Year 5/6: Aventurine: Gallery

The children had a good night and started the day with a full English breakfast. Then it was a day of adevnture golf, dodgeball, ice curling, roller skating, pickleball and 5 a side. Enjoy the photographs.

We have arrived and the sun shining. We have already played in the field and played badminton and table tennis. Dinner at 6.30pm then cinema.

We have being using the book Skellig by David Almond as a stimulus for our artwork this term. Wow what sensational models they have created using their knowledge of proportion and scale alongside, carving anatomically onto the clay. I can't wait to see these dried, when we will continue and decorate the wings.

The children in Aventurine have been working on their problem solving skills in maths to solve challenges involving fractions.
They have also be thinking about shape and their understanding of key terms such as congruence and translation.

The children had a fabulous experience in the planetarium dome this week. Learning about the planets, volcanoes and asteroids.

Renewable and Sustainable sources of energy

The children in Aventurine made models of the national grid. They did this because they have been exploring the terms renewable, non - renewable and sustainable. They even powered up their house using their previous knowledge of how to make a simple circuit.

The children came home tonight with the amount of bounces they did on a sticker.

Today, I let the children write on the tables in their maths meet session. I couldn't get over how much amazing learning was done and with such happy engaged children. They can't wait to do this again.

What an amazing morning Aventurine had. Our day started with speedy reading - where the children moved around the class and tried to persuade each other to read a book of their choice. And the costumes, so creative and fun. The children looked fabulous!!! Our highlight was recieving a special box of books for one of our pupils. She joined Aventurine from the Ukraine last year. The box included books in her ukraine, with special English translations. The children were totally in awe of her, as she read to them in the ukranian language. Unbelievably, she can also read and speak fluent Russian.

We are learning how to creat concept maps in computer studies this term. We made a physical network to show how all the ideas relating to the main concept are inter - related.
Science Week - Year 5's Forces

Last week saw all the children in year 5 come together for the morning in Aventurine Class, where we investigated the science topic of forces. By looking for patterns and fair testing the children were able to identify the effects of Gravity and explain how air resistance changes the rate at which objects travel. Lots of fun and creativity was had in trying to make the most streamlined paper plane. The children loved the jelly experiment where they saw how adding oil reduced friction, which meant that they couldn't hold the jelly cubes in their chopsticks!!! Afterthis they did a fair test to investigate water resistance, by seeing which shape of plasticine travelled through water the best. The final day was spent exploring pulleys, levers and gears, which they learnt are amazing mechanisms that allow smaller forces to have fa greater effect.

The children in Aventurine have been learning about the importance of prayer to Muslims. They enjoyed creating these prayer mats using a mix media of watercolours and fine art.

It has been a busy morning in Aventurine. All the children took part in an action packed Masterchef experience. The children designed their finished products before making and evaluating the results. The winners of the competition went to the vegetariann group, who stuck closey to their design when creating their salad. Take a look at the creativity of the designs... we even had a christmas tree salad.
The children really enjoyed both the experience and the final products!!!

We had an amazing week focusing on Properties and Changes of Materials. The children could not believe that every morning we did two different experiments.
We compared materials according to their properties, we tested materials based on their thermal conductivity, and gave reasons for their use. We then thought about how and why materials dissolve, and how some form solutions and others mixtures. We were set a task to separate mixtures and solutions, after am accident had happened in a local suppermarket. On the final day we created a gas!!! By using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar we saw how these created a chemical change when they were mixed together.

Last Thursday Aventurine class went to Capels Mill where we met Tasmin from the Stroud Water Project. Here, she led us in a fieldwork investigation. She taught us the names of equipment, which we then use to carry out a filteration experiement where we look for Eel DNA. We have sent our samples off to Slimbridge who will take a look and see if the sample we tested did have eel DNA in it.

Every day last week, even when it was raining, the children in Aventurine ran a mile to raise funds for Pudsey. I was so impressed with their determination and their discipline as they acheived their personal goals. Well done Aventurine!

Working in groups we explored language based on the first few chapters of the book Holes by Louis Sacher. The children then showed there creativity by generating sentences to describe the setting of Holes.

A few photos from the amazing trip to Stroud Book Festival last week, where we met the very animated, award winning performance poet, 'Joseph Cohelo'. It was so exciting for the children to meet him after studying the book Creeping Beauty, last term.
Aventurine Visit to Slade Farm

A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Kingdom for welcoming Aventurine to Slade farm and organising a wonderful day fulll of outdoor learning and fieldwork. After working in the orchard the children made a farm model using items they collected which was based on their sketches and understanding of slade farm.

On Monday we were really excited to visit Glouceter Prison where we learnt all about prisons,punishment and crimes and how this has changed over time.

'I liked lying on the prison bed- it was hard and small!' - Romie.
'There were loads of prison cells and we got to see the hanging door - where the prisoners would fall!' - Ethan.
