Last Friday Aventurine visited Stroud Museum, where we all had the most amazing day. Highlights of the day included meeting Peter Playne a mill owner, following a trail around the museum, map work which saw the class plotting the differences in Stroud that had occurred since 1835 and learning more about the cloth Industry. At the end of the day the children made a magnificent human loom.

The children in Aventurine are amazing actors. In order to build up ideas to retell events and feel what Jim, the main character from Street Child was feeling we used drama to explore the plot. They not only thoroughly enjoyed the lesson, they completely captured how it was for Jim in the workhouse.

This morning Aventurine have be learning that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but they have also had fun exploring their traits and characteristics that may or may not be different to their families.
Can you spot the tongue rollers? The group with a second toe longer than their big toe? What other groups can you spot?

In our dance lessons the children have been thinking about the Industrial Revolution. Using their imaginations, the children became the workers, building the bridges, railways and tunnel. Then they proceeded to create this improvisation using the rhythm of the music to convey the repetitive nature of their actions.

On Friday morning, we learnt 4 new stitches and practised our sewing skills using these 4 types. They were the running stitch, back stitch, cross stitch and blanket stitch. The children will use these skills to design and make a Christmas stocking that will be sold at the PTA Christmas Fair.

Over the last couple of weeks, the children have learnt the running stitch, back stitch, cross stitch and blanket stitch. They then designed their own Christmas stocking to sell at the school Christmas fair. In each stocking the children had to make a stocking that would fit on a Christmas tree, include at least two stitches they had learnt and be selling to the target market (children and adults). I think you will all agree that they did an amazing job, and their stockings look wonderful!

This week we visited Slade Farm. We took a short walk from school and along the way we all admired the views of Stroud. Once we arrived, we were greeted by Heidi and Sarah who talked us through the morning. We had lots of fun building our own mini rafts with sticks and reeds and then tested them in the stream to see which ones were the quickest. After this, we searched along the hedgerow to see how many different plant species we could spot. The children enjoyed playing a mini bug mime game before we settled down on the grass to have some lunch, again admiring the amazing views!!

Today, we dedicated the whole day to researching, developing and preparing our own seasonal salads. After our trip to Hawkwood College, we know all about what grows seasonally in the UK. First, we tasted ingredients in a traditional Greek salad and then thought about flavours and textures to create our own recipes. In groups, we used a range of tools to grate, peel, slice and chop fruits and vegetables. Next, we added ingredients such as seeds, olives and cheese before mixing and drizzling sweet and zingy dressings on our salads. As you can see, they not only looked irresistible but were also healthy and delicious!

We had an amazing time at the Stroud Reading Festival. The children thoroughly enjoyed sitting and listening to the incredibly inspiring Emma Carroll. We are looking forward to diving in and reading her new book ‘The Tales of Truthwater Lake’.
English fun with 'direct speech'

This week, we had lots of fun reminding ourselves how to punctuate direct speech. We learnt a super catchy song to help us remember; please ask your child if they can sing it to you! Be warned though it is very catchy!! After this, the children tried turning some text messages between Mrs Barrett and Mrs Ward into direct speech. We then created comic strips around a conversation between two soldiers hiding in the Trojan horse. The children acted their comic strips and then turned them into direct speech to prove that they can now punctate direct speech accurately. What a busy but fun week we had in English!!

Friday 9th December – Christmas Jumper Day Please wear a Christmas jumper/top (sparkly or red/green etc) to school with leggings/jeans etc and silver coins donations for school funds

Diamond and Ruby classes enjoyed a great trip to Stroud Library this week. We were given an information talk about how to access fiction and non-fiction texts. Then we got busy taking part in a treasure hunt to find a variety of different titles in the children’s section. We all got the chance to select a book to take home and used the machines to borrow them. After that we had the chance to work in the lab with an “apple piano” made by using our hands to complete a circuit of wires connected to different apples. It was fun to experiment with the different notes and some of Stroud Valley’s budding scientists spotted that the piano would still work if we added extra people’s hands into the circuit. Finally we saw the laser cutter in action and it created cardboard ghosts for us each to take home. Many thanks to Archie and Ollie from Stroud Library for leading our exciting activities.

In this term’s Art and Design we are looking at creating self portraits in different media. We used mirrors to check the orientation of each feature and talked about light and shade – we are very proud of the results!

This week we have been learning a new stitch – “blanket stitch”. We used felt and coloured thread to create this new stitch. Some of us found threading the needle and tying a knot a challenge so we need lots more practice!

Amber Class have been using different materials to create the settings from the Lonely Beast. They have been using charcoal and chalk to make a dark cave; collaging to make a forest scene; bubble printing and ink. We have had a wonderful day and you will all receive an incredible gift at the end of the year.

Amber Class had a wonderful learning experience at the museum today. We asked some big questions: What is history? What are museums and why do we have them? Who are historians? The children visited different areas of the museum and saw many different collections. They sang songs and rhymes and even dug for artefacts! They were all very well behaved and were true ambassadors of SVCS. A great first trip!

We had a fab morning with Tamsin from Stroud Valleys project. We had to take the chaff off wheat seeds . mill them into flour. make dough and finally bake bread rolls.

What a fun day we had at The Museum at The Park . We handled old toys, played old fashioned games and made old fashioned toys. We even got to look around the whole museum.
