The Vikings Have Landed!!!
Today, in Aventurine we created a dramatic re - enactment of when the Vikings arrived at Lindsifarne Priory, in AD 793. The children arrived at school looking absolutely fabulous in their costumes: Monks, Anglo Saxons and of course the Vikings!!! They had previously made lots of props, including Viking boats,Anglo Saxon jewellery, wepons, Bibles and manuscripts. The poor Anglo Saxons didn't stand a chance, as our terrifying Viklings arrived....

We have been learning about the Art and Crafts Movement' and in particular the artist William Morris. We have been looking at his nature inspired prints. So far we have drawn fruit and vegetable still lilfes using pastels. Here we are proudly showing off our work. Next we create our own nature-inspired tiles and create a repeated printed pattern (photographs to follow).

Yesterday, Diamond and Ruby class visited the STEAM centre in Swindon to learn more about their topic 'Railway Revolution'. We caught the train to Swindon (taking up almost a whole carriage) and walked to the musuem in the sunshine. Once there we learnt all about how the people of Swindon would have felt about a railway being built - some for and some against. The children dressed up and acted as doctors, nurses, inn keepers etc explaining why they wanted (or didn't) want the railway. We then explored the musuem, even walking under the massive locomotive 'The Caerphilly Castle'. We had a fantastic day which shows in these wonderful photographs.

Diamond and Ruby Class went to visit the STEAM centre in Swindon as part of their Railway Revolution topic this Summer term. As part of the trip, we had a fantastic workshop where we learnt about people who supported the building of the railways in the 1830s and people who were against them being built. To top it all off, we took the train there and back along one of the lines which Brunel designed when he was working at the centre, which used to be the headquarters of the Great Western Railway.

Last Wednesday Diamond and Ruby Class went on the train to Gloucester, the children were very excited to be travelling by train (a first for some of them) and we took up almost a whole carriage! We then walked to the Masjid-e-Noor mosque and learnt all about Islam and what happens in a mosque. The children asked lots of fantastic questions and were very respectful. Then we walked to the Gloucester Musuem and learnt about Anglo-Saxons setlling in Gloucester. The children did role-play and looked at artefacts, as well as listening to an Anglo-Saxon tale called 'The Dragon of Deerhurst'. Then we hopped back on the train - a great school trip and all on our doorstep.

One of our PE topics this term has been badminton, we started off by using balloons to learn racket skills - easier than the shuttlecock! We have now progressed to using the shuttlecocks!

This term our Geography topic has been 'Where in the World?' and we have learnt about where our food comes from. We had lots of different fruits, vegetables, cereals and meats from around the world including:
Week 1: Oranges
Week 2: Wheat
Week 3: Bananas
Week 4: Rice
Week 5: Antipasti (Meditteranean meat and cheese)
We made orange juice, baked bread rolls and banana bread loafs, vegetable fried rice and sampled lots of Mediterranean meats, cheeses and vegetables.
There were cutting, peeling, baking, kneading and all types of cooking skills involved!

On Tuesday we went to visit the new Stroud Library. It was a lovely experience, the children were amazing. They completed a treasure hunt, were all really respectful and enjoyed sitting and enjoying the atmosphere, reading the books. Please do go and visit! A massive thanks to Archie for a great session!

Last week we looked at where wheat came from and how it is processed into flour. We made our own hedgehog bread rolls and look at how cute they are! We also made our own butter from double cream (it took a LOT of shaking).

Our geography topic this term is 'Where Does Our Food Come From?', each week we will be looking at different foods that we eat on a regular basis and where it comes from. On our first week back we looked at the journey of oranges from where they are grown to how they end up as juice on our breakfast table.
The children then squeezed their own oranges and drank the juice (which they LOVED). Then they compared it to juice made from concentrate that we buy in the supermarket (they did not like it once they had tried the fresh!).

We recently had an expert chess master in to help us understand and play the game of chess. For some of the children this was the first experience of chess they had had. All the children really enjoyed these sessions.

Before starting our Frida portraits, we created double page spreads where we focused on specific techniques. We lookedat the background of her art and used different materials to create our own sketches based on hers. We also had a go at drawing in the style of Frida kahlo by doing a self portrait lying on our backs!

In Maths we have been looking at the 2D shape a rectangle. We made different rectangles and went on a retangle hunt!

In Science we have been learing about the human body. We drew around a friend in our group and labelled the main body parts we need to know for Year 1 and 2.

Our topic in Autum Term 1 was "Memory Box". As part of this we brought in bags full of memories all about us! We shared them with our friends and spoke with such confidence! We learnt so much more about each other.
