In today's Science learning about light we found out all about sun safety. We learned the words ultraviolet and ray. Then we had a fun game of "Heroes and Villains" where we had different statements about the sun to read and then decide if that was a "Hero" or "Villain". Some of us spotted that some statements could belong in both groups and we were able to use our scientific words to justify our reasoning. It was quite a noisy game but lots of fun! Mrs R-T chose to be the villan and Miss Taylor was the hero :)

Mirror mirror on the wall - who is the fairest of them all?

In today's science learning we have been finding out about reflection. We found out that light travels in straight lines and bounces off flat, reflective surfaces such as a mirror. During our investigations today, we used a mirror to write secret messages for a friend that had the letters reversed – they needed a mirror to read them! Then we used a mirror help us travel along different chalk lines drawn on the hall floor. We used the mirror held above our heads to track the reflection and move along the lines. It was tricky not to have a “sneaky peak” at the ground to help us!

This week’s Science topic for Year 3 is all about Light. We got busy sorting different light sources into 2 groups :- "natural" and "artificial".
Next we found out about retro-reflective material. Our challenge was to adivse a book bag company about what material could be used to ensure the bookbag could be seen safely outdoors at night. In groups, we predicted which materials would be most reflective and then used a torch to test our predictions. When we shared our results we discovered eveyone had predicted foil to be the most reflective and our tests proved that our predictions were correct!

Emerald Class Visit Gloucester Prison

We had a fascinating visit to Gloucester Prison, it was very interesting and quite eerie as well. We got to learn all about the history of the prison and how punishments had changed over the years. We even got to go in a cell. The sound of the prison cell door closing was quite scary!
Aventurine Visit to Slade Farm

A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Kingdom for welcoming Aventurine to Slade farm and organising a wonderful day fulll of outdoor learning and fieldwork. After working in the orchard the children made a farm model using items they collected which was based on their sketches and understanding of slade farm.

The sun shone and we spent a lovely afternoon doing some tree conservation work, fed the chickens and did a scavenger hunt and art in the forest. We ate our lunch and watched a buzzard circling in the sky. The trees that were planted a few years ago (including one by Phoebe in our class!) were now safe from deer, so the cages were removed and we got rid of the grass and mulched the area around the base. The chickens were quite brave and let us feed them. Thank you for a lovely afternoon Sarah.
Eel DNA extraction at Capel's Mill

Emerald Class spent a morning down at Capel's Mill with Tamsin from Stroud Valleys Prokect, our mission was to extract water from the river to see if eel DNA was present.
We used our map reading skills and then set up stations at various locations along the river. We collected water samples and then had to filter the water, add a buffer solution and then send off the samples. The laboratory will then test the water samples to see if there is evidence of eel DNA.
We learnt all about the life cycle of the eel and the incredible 4,000 mile journey they take from the Sargasso Sea and end up in Stroud 2 or 3 years later.
Big thank you to Tamsin for such a fascinating moring, we are all very interested in these incredible creatures.

On Monday we were really excited to visit Glouceter Prison where we learnt all about prisons,punishment and crimes and how this has changed over time.
A few quotes from the children,
'I liked lying on the prison bed- it was hard and small!' - Romie.
'There were loads of prison cells and we got to see the hanging door - where the prisoners would fall!' - Ethan.
'Seeing the cells was interesting as itwas fun to imagine where the prisoners had lived their lives.' - Heidi.

WOW! What an amazing time we all had at Hooke Court this year. The children were fantastic and made it very easy for us adults so thank you children!
The children took part in a range of wonderful activities including: bridging the moat, night search and rescue, tribal kingdom day, shell craft and rocket building!
As always, the first night resulted in many excited children taking a while to get off to sleep but come night two they were all ready for their beds after the evening activity.
We all enjoyed some delicious food for breakfast, lunch and tea!
I am sure you will agree from looking at the photos and videos that the children (and adults) had a truly memorable experience away and one that they will hopefully remember and cherish for a long time!

Today we enjoyed a session outdoors led by 2 visitors from the Scrapstore. We were shown all the new resources we can use at lunchtime and got busy making, creating and using our imaginations to have loads of fun. At the end of the session most of us were given dojos for being fabulous "tidier uppers" !

Today, we had a brilliant afternoon visiting the beautiful Slade Farm. We arrived in time for a picnic lunch and then we got busy making rafts and 3D landscapes using only natural materials. There was plenty of teamwork, problem solving and creativity all around.

Our new English unit is based on the book 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King. This week we immersed ourselves into the unit through using Lego to build Stig's den, thinking about what items he would have inside. We then focused on our grammar looking at using the correct punctuation for direct speech. We had a super fun lesson where we learnt a new song to help us remember what we need to include and the week ended with us becoming Stig, engaging in a conversation between himself and Barney. This resulted in a final piece of work which showed a conversation between Sig and Barney in which the direct speech was punctuated correctly.

Well done to all The "Diamond Dazzlers" who brought in their homework activities all about our topic on "The Romans. We enjoyed seeing a homemade carved wooden sword and a wooden dagger, pictures of a homemade full sized shield, factfiles on Gods and Goddesses, a Roman comic with detailed illustrations, Roman numeral maths, 2 detailed mosaics made with coloured paper squares, facts about Pompeii and photos of a young cook creating (and tasting!) Roman honey cakes in Stroud. We are looking forward to seeing more items from the rest of the class very soon . . .

To help us understand how bronze objects were made in the Bronze Age, we made our own plaster cast tiles. We had a fantastic time and the results were beautiful. Have a look at the photos to find out about the process we followed.

We visited the Corinium Museum in Cirencester to kick start our topic. We took part in a great workshop which showed us how the Romans lived and then explored the museum and its fantastic artefacts which were over 2000 years old! We had a great time and have come away with some super facts for our topic lessons.

On Monday afternoon the children in Aventurine learnt a range of 12 sports games. As 'Playleaders' the children will help the younger children in the school learn to play these games, during the lunchtime. We had a great afternoon outside and the children can't wait to get started.

In maths the children worked in partners to represent 5 digit numbers using place value counters. They started with 39,999 and added one more to find out what would happen and why 9 is a magic number.
