We've been busy celebrating Diwali in Amethyst. We made rangoli patterns using coloured rice, used our 2D shape knowledge to make rangoli patterns and made our own Diya lamps to take home. We had such fun and learnt lots about "The festival of Light".

All of the children make the most fantastic boats as part of their homework. We were SO proud of them and then we went down to the river to float them, it was so much fun and we enjoyed using our scientific skills of prediction and how we could make it a fair test.
Trip to Stroud Museum in the Park

What a fantastic day we had visiting Stroud Museum in the Park. As part of our topic 'The Bronze Age', we took part in a range of activities to help us understand more about this era. The children handled pre-historic tools and had to guess what they were based some clues. We went on a pre-history discovery trail around the museum and took a walk around the new 'Earth, Fire and Iron' exhibition. In the afternoon, the children used Stone Age tools to cut up vegetables; this proved to be quite a challenge for a lot of us! By far, our most memorable experience was having the opportunity to work with two blacksmiths and create our own Bronze casting to bring home. I am sure you can agree this was a super trip for all of the children (and adults)!

What an amazing time we all had at Hooke Court. The children immersed themselves in all the activities and they had lots of fun learning many new skills. As a team, the children constructed a rope-pull system to get medical supplies across the moat. In the evening, they had a great time singing crazy songs around a campfire. One of their favourite activities was creating beautiful magnets using delicate shells. As part of the Tribal Kingdom day the children gathered logs to build dens, became tribes for the day by choosing their own tribe leader and came up with a tribal chant. By far the most exciting experience was making rockets and blasting them up into the sky! All adults were extremely impressed with the behaviour of the children and they made us all proud!

This week we have learning all about Boudicca and how, after the death of her husband, she and her fellow Celts revolted against the Romans. We hot-seated to discover how each side woud have felt.

This term Diamond Class have learning how to play tag rugby with Vinnie. He has been impressed with the children's progress and the new skills they have learnt and applied.

Last week was science week and the Year 3's learnt all about plants. It was a great week: they dissected plants and labelled the different parts and learnt about their functions; learnt how water is transported through a plant, the life cycle of a plant and all about seed dispersal.

Both Diamond and Ruby Class spent an absolutely brilliant day at the Roman Baths in Bath. The main bath was filled with water and the stone columns and statues of Roman emperors added to the grandeur. In the morning we walked around the baths and saw Roman paths that were 2,000 years old. In the afternoon we did workshops: building a Roman bridge, putting a temple back together and using a crane to erect a column. Then we became archaeologists and dug up Roman artefacts, as well as using iPads to identify pieces of stone that had been dug up. We dressed as Romans in togas and tunics and made mosaics. It was a great trip and really brought our topic to life.

On my first day with the children, we took part in a lovely team building exercise. The children were given the challenge to design a new outfit for one of their peers using only the materials provided. I was extremely proud of how the children interacted with each other. The amazing communication and team work from each group showed me that this year is going to be a wonderfully supportive year with each other. I am sure you will agree that their creations were catwalk worthy!

We immersed ourselves into our new English unit this week. Our book is called 'How to wash a Woolly Mammoth' so we naturally had some very muddy teddies that needed a good clean! This lesson was a great starting input into thinking about the set of instructions needed to wash a pre-historic animal. It was also great fun :)

On Thursday we went to Stroud library to find out about the summer reading challenge. We met Archie who talked to us. Then we enjoyed reading books together. Thank you for letting us visit.

How exciting this week has been. On wednesday we dissected some Barn Owl pellets. We could not believe how many bones we found! evidence of mice, shrews, voles and birds.

On Thursday we were lucky enough to meet Tamsin from Stroud Valley's project to go pond dipping at Capel's Mill. We had to use indentity sheets to name 4 things we found. Pond snail, newts - palmate and smooth, pond skaters and leach. But to our surprise for the first time in 10 years no dragonfly larvea

Yesterday we visited Giffords Circus and had the most amazingtime, the show was SPECTACULAR!
The children (and adults) loved it: ask them what tehir favourite part was.

We have been growing plants and cress to look at the roots and shoots. We grew cress in one week and today made egg and cress sandwiches.

Quartz Class trip to Pitt Rivers

What a fascinating day we had at the Pitt Rivers Museum!
After a fun journey on the coach to Oxford, we spent time exploring the Museum of Natural History where we saw a dodo skeleton, a piece of quartz the size of a watermelon and the bones of a T-Rex. Then, we had our packed lunches before entering into the dark and mysterious world of the Pitt Rivers Museum. Here we took park in a workshop and tour of the Benin and Africa collections. We were asked to find symbols of the Oba's power which included crocodiles, leopards, weapons and thrones. The Benin bronzes, Oba heads and the history of the collection will go onto inspire our topic learning for the rest of the term.

We had a brilliant morning at The heavens this week. We spotted early spring flowers, liostened to and spotted birds. Ate delicious cooking thanks Mrs EBS! spotted things in the stream and paddled in the stream. Thanks for all the help.

Who doesn't like a good book. Today we read Mr Wolf's pancakes by Jan Fearnely. Extremely funny with a little surprise at the end. We had a lovely day enjoying activities based round this book and of course making pancakes! We also talked about Shrove Tuesday.
