On Friday 5th May the Children in Aventurine finished their crowns, then took part in a procession around the playground with the children from the other classes. The day was spent doing activities based around the coronation. The children produced a beautiful piece of artwork based on all they know about London and King Charles.

We have had a wonderful week celebrating the King's coronation. It started with the children making crowns using recycled materials; they were all fabulous! Then we spent time looking at what will happen during the ceremony; the children were fascinated to learn all about the two carriages that would be used and the crowns! The children created beautiful celebration cards to send to the King and the week ended with a lovely crown parade and whole school picnic.

We had a super day celebrating the upcoming coronation. The children made crowns and the whole school paraded around the playground, it was such a colourful sight.

In history our topic is 'What have the Anceint Greeks Done For Us?' This week we learnt about democracy and the children role played. There was some very dramatic acting around who was guilty of murder!

This term in geography we are learning all about trade and ecomony in the UK. This week we looked at agriculture, one very eye-opening aspect was 'mega farms' These massive farms are set up to meet the needs of fast food outlets and supermarkets. Ask your child how much space 15 chickens are given in mega farms, versus free range. We went onto the playground to chalk up the dimensions.

The children acted out two different scenarios to support their learning about Greek democracy. One scenario was based on a criminal court and one based on the greek assembly. They passed a law that slaves should be paid and convicted a slave(Bella!!!) that had killed her slave owner because she treated her slave poorly(Faye). Niall was the logographer(professional speech writer), the group of boys were in the boule and the whole class voted democractically.

All the children followed a design to make the base of their crown and then personalised them with recycled materials. A big thank you to Mrs Taylor, who as you can see in the photo below, is a dab hand with the glue gun and was a huge support in helping the children. I am always impressed with the creativity of the children. Watch this space for more photos of their finished projects.

Diamond Class’s trip to Wallbridge Upper Lock and Canal Basin enabled us to extend our knowledge of this term’s topic on "the Canal in Stroud". Volunteers from Stroud Canals Trust gave us an informative guided walk along the canal towpath and we also enjoyed a relaxing boat trip to Capels Mill and an information session about the history and restoration of the local canal at the Visitors’ Centre. After a delicious packed lunch with our friends we were fascinated to be shown the lock gate being opened and closed and to observe the difference it made to the level of the water in the canal. We found out that the captain of our boat, Bob, was also the captain of the boat King Charles III sailed on when the canal was reopened by the then Prince Charles back in 2018!. Our busy day ended with a scenic walk back to school along the canal.
The children had a busy and informative day and we had lots to talk about when we got back to school. Amongst the many comments the children mentioned: “I didn’t realise the canal was in a state of repair and had to be fixed”. “the volunteers were so kind and friendly to us and know lots of facts to share with us”, “I didn’t know donkeys were strong enough to pull the boats” and “I was really interested in how the lock gates made a difference to the water going down and up again!”

Last week Aventurine took part in an African Drumming working. The children learnt how to feel for the pulse of the music, play in unison and a go using 3 different instruments.

Daimond Class enjoyed a lively visit from a drummer this week. We explored pace, rhthymn, volume as we worked together to create some intricate music together.

TRANSLATION AND REFLECTION
In maths the children have been exploring shape. They have learnt how to translate and reflect regular and irregular polygons. They enjoyed playing maths games to practice their new skills. They know that a reflection produces an image that is the same distance from the mirror line as the object and that a translation moves a shape up, down, left, or right to produce a congruent image.

Our new topic is the "Canals of Stroud" and we enjoyed a soggy afternoon in our Forest School area buliding and investigating a toy lock system.

Greek Dancing and Drama
The children in Aventurine had a fabulous time in dance this week. They used their bodies to create poses that represented The Ancient Greek Olympic games.

The children did themselves proud on our visit to the Pitt Rivers this week. We saw all sorts of artefacts from human history across the world and heard the fascinating stories behind lots of them.

The children in Adventurine have been enjoying exploring about the Maya. After researching their own Maya spirit animal they created designs to reflect this.They then showed their artistic talents by creating their own masks. |

We have had a great day celebrating our love of reading! The children (and adults) all looked amazing!!
We drew along with Sarah McIntyre (the author and illustrator of our new class book, Pugs from the Frozen North); Watched the BBC Live World Book Day Event; had time to just sit and read for pleasure; went off to listen to an adult read us a book of our choice and made some lovely bookmarks.
Year 6 Science - evolution and inheritance.

While Year 5 were at Hooke Court we spent 3 days learning all about evolution and inheritance. We learnt about Charles Darwin and his observations on the finches’ beaks whilst in the Galapagos Islands. We also did Human pictograms about inherited characteristics.

We had a super day at our local museum, learning all about the journey of wool from sheep to cloth. We also looked at maps from the 1800 and 1900s and present day to see what areas had been developed, as well as being a human loom!.

Aventurine and Emerald Amazing trip to the Mills of Stroud.
Last week we went on a trip to Dunkirk,Gigg and Ruskin Mills.At Gigg Mill we learnt how to weave and how to spin wool using a spinning wheel. We loved seeing all the interesting machines. We even got to try them ourselves. The two men, Robin and Peter, were lovely and really helped us to understand how to weave. We also went to Ruskin Mill where we saw a watermill and learnt about hydro- electricity. At Dunkirk mill we learnt about the work of a child in the mill. We were amazed to see the waterwheels working and the noise that they made. Did you know that the cloth from the mills is used for soldiers and for covering billiard tables? We all had a really fantastic day.It really was the best trip ever!
